Mike Gent
Like most artists, Mike doesn’t remember a time when he wasn’t drawing or painting. Also, like most artists, he has experimented with many forms of media, currently focusing on charcoal drawing and oil painting. At this stage of his artistic career, he is fascinated by and immersed in the various theoretical aspects of color as well as the limitations imposed by the oil-based pigments available. Mike is experimenting with glazing and color contrasts. Mastering techniques and color theory are keys to fully expressing himself through his work.

Mike grew up in Pennsylvania and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. He took a left turn in his creative efforts to concentrate on mechanical engineering, metalwork, and drafting to earn a living. In 2014, he refocused his creativity on his painting and drawing.

Drawing, to Mike, is the basis for painting and his paintings generally begin with charcoal or pencil studies. The story of a painting or drawing is driven by the lines and shapes as they develop on the blank page of the canvas or paper. His art can be inspired by a movement, a glance, an expression, a twist of light, or a challenge to his techniques.

As the owner of Cattywampus Studio in Gardiner, Maine, Mike holds life drawing sessions and encourages other artists to expand their knowledge of materials and broaden their artistic reach. He is active in the local art community and exhibits frequently.
